Psychotherapy London

Psychotherapy is a talking type therapy which takes place on a one to one basis, in a safe, calm, relaxed environment. We offer person centred transpersonal integrative psychotherapy for mental health difficulties. We offer adjunct eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing therapy (EMDR) as part of psychotherapy. We also offer  body psychotherapy to help with mental health difficulties.

What is psychotherapy?

In psychotherapy a person talks through their difficulties with a psychotherapist. This is one of the simplest and most effective forms of therapy. This type of approach is therapeutic for a number of reasons. It helps externalise a difficulty allowing space between you and the difficulty which you might be having.

When a therapist reflects back to a client from an objective viewpoint it enables a client to really see themselves. The realm of change and new possibility opens. One can start to challenge one's own way of being as opposed to believing that things are just the way they are. Understanding why a person feels the way they do is often influenced by the unconscious. Psychotherapy makes the unconscious, conscious meaning there is the possibility of change.

Broadly speaking psychotherapy can help with historical baggage which we might carry around with us. It can help bring us into the present moment as well as change and prepare us for the future. When we work with ourselves and understand who we are on an in depth level we can change the world we live in. There are lots of techniques for achieving this but some of them might include basic counselling skills, internal family systems, creative imagination, working with family scripts, visualisation, typology, ego states and many more.

A psychotherapist can help to plant a metaphorical seed and help a person to nurture that seed into full bloom. What was once perceived as a weakness becomes a strength. The development and rebalancing of qualities enables self empowerment and the ability to find meaning in life. What was once a grey bleak winter landscape begins to develop colour. Buds begin to open and growth has begun. With the right therapeutic relationship the once winter landscape develops into a blossoming mezze of colour.

Creative Imagination

Creative imagination helps us to access the parts that talking therapy cannot reach. Guided visualisation enables us access and work with different parts of the unconscious.

Talking

Processing difficulties through talking therapy is the bedrock of psychotherapy. Getting a problem out and hearing yourself say it enables you to reflect on it in a different way. A simple and effective way of working.

Internal Family Systems

Internal family systems helps us to understand different aspects of our psyches, what parts are out of our conscious awarness and the defenses we might deploy when we feel threatened.

Elements

Appreciating who you are at a soul nature level can help give you insight and dettachment from every day psychological difficulties. Balancing element qualities can help you feel connected to yourself and help with homeostasis.

Art Therapy

Using our creativity can help us engage in therapy in a different way. Art therapy enables a person to externalise something onto paper, play with it, reflect on it and change it.

Body Therapy

Body therapy helps us to understand the role our body plays in psychological difficulties and how body based awareness can help. We might work with the nervous system, the vagus nerve, chakras and the breath.

Psychotherapy Benefits

Authenticity

Psychotherapy can help you connect with your true nature and become more authentic. This means that there is more congruency between your true self and the persona you present to the world.

Balance

Once you get to the root of the difficulties and you have the chance to process them in a safe environment you are able to feel more in balance. You can reach a state of homeostasis.

Clear Thinking

Psychotherapy can help to calm down our thinking as we develop other qualities in order to mediate difficulties we come across in our daily lives.

Contentment

When we discover and accept who we are through a psychotherapeutic process we are able to feel more accepting of ourselves. This enables us to accept where we are and make the changes we might need to make for a better future.

Psychotherapy London FAQ's

How long will psychotherapy last?

Psychotherapy is a long term approach to a mental health difficulty. It is designed to bring about long lasting change which takes time. Rather than being directive it is a process which allows you the space to explore. Everyone takes different amounts of time. I would usually ask my clients to commit to their process for one year.

What happens in a psychotherapy session?

Every session will be slightly different. In person centred psycotherapy a client takes the lead and the therapist holds the space, listens and reflects back what you have said. A therapist might hold the space, encourage you to sit with the difficulty, focus on feelings, reflect back what you have said, provide insight or suggest a specific intervention.

How can I get the most out of therapy?

With any therapy making changes takes time. It is important to commit to a process and be consistant with therapy. Most therapists expect a minimum commitment of one session every week. I encourage my clients to speak about the things they try to hide from everybody else.
