Cognitive Processing Therapy London
Cognitive processing therapy is a type of behavioural therapy which helps to address some of the difficulties related to post traumatic stress disorder and related difficulties. It was originally developed to assist members of the armed forces to help them in a short term structured way.
Cognitive processing therapy takes a written and homework based format. Homework is set at the end of each session which forms the basis for discussion and feedback in the following session.
Cognitive processing therapy aims to:
- Highlight and address stuck points related to the trauma experience.
- The impact trauma has had on their lives and their views about themselves and the world.
- Address and change unhelpful thinking patterns and negative thoughts to help foster a more balanced, healthy perspective.
Cognitive processing therapy is for anyone who has experienced a trauma and is still suffering from trauma or ptsd symptoms following the event.
At the Trauma Practice our preferred method of addressing trauma is eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing therapy (EMDR). We bolster emdr therapy with cognitive processing therapy and other approached when it is needed. It is also helpful as an alternative to emdr and can therefore be used as a stand alone treatment for ptsd.
Matthew Alderton - Psychotherapist
MA, BSc, PG Dip, PG Dip Psych
I am a trauma informed psychotherapist and emdr practitioner. It is important to see a trauma informed therapist because traditional therapies like psychotherapy can re-trigger trauma symptoms. I use psychotherapy as a basis for adjunct EMDR therapy and complex trauma or complex PTSD. I also use techniques based in polyvagal theory, trauma release, emotional freedom technique, cognitive processing therapy and body psychotherapy. EMDR is the leading evidence based treatment for PTSD. I work in a holistic integrative way, taking into account the ecology of a person's life as well as their mind, body and soul. I am personable, friendly and down to earth. I provide a safe, confidential, collaborative environment for you to work through your difficulty. I look forward to hearing from you.
