Depression affects 1 in every 6 adults in the UK. Women are at a higher risk than men from experiencing depression. Depression can be linked to other underlying mental health conditions which might include anxiety, stess, loneliness and trauma.

What Is Depression?

Depression is a feeling of sadness and loss of interest in engaging in everyday life. Depression can vary in terms of its severity as well as how long it lasts. Depression migth fall into several categories. These include, major or clinical depression, persistent depressive disorder, bipolar or manic depression or postpartum depression.

What Causes Depression?

There is no single cause of depression. It can be caused by a number of different factors. Examples might include a life changing event like trauma, losing meaning in your life through loss e.g. bereavement or job, struggling with a long term health problem, loneliness, alcohol or drug use, family history, complex trauma in upbringing including abuse, personality type factors, menopause symptoms and postpartum depression.

Depression Symptoms

Everyone has off days where we might feel a little flat or low. Depression is more extreme than this and can last for long periods of time. Depression symptoms can include feeling empty, feeling sad, feeling hoplessness, reslessness or lack of energy. A person might struggle to engage with life or carry out everyday activities like washing or housework. Depression symptoms can be physical and mental.

I trained at CCPE in London to become a counsellor and psychotherapist. I am also an EMDR practitioner. I use an integrated approach to help people with depression. I use psychotherapy, EMDR, behavioural therapy and polyvagal therapy. My approach has several phases including working with the underlying causes of the depression followed by a behavioural approach to help someone out of depression as well staving off future depressive episodes.

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy provides a calming relaxed environment for you to work through difficulties you might be having in relation to depression. It can help you with the underlying cause of your depression and associated difficulties.

Polyvagal Therapy

Polyvagal therapy can help you to understand the psychological and somatic mechanisms which are influencing your depression. It also provides a practical way of mapping what you and other people supporting you can do, to help you with depression symptoms.

Behavioural Therapy

Behavioural therapy for depression can help give you a practical way of taking action to assist with depression. Sometimes we need that helping hand to support us back to health.

EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing therapy. Trauma is one of the cauases of depression EMDR can help you to reprocess underlying trauma which might be contributing to depression symptoms. I use EMDR to help you process traumatic or painful memories from the past, look at present behaviour and how to prepare for a more positive future.

What does a depression therapy session look like?

I always begin therapy by getting to know you and where you are at. We might work on some of the root causes of the depression with psychotherapy or EMDR. We might use behavioural therapy to help you find a structured way of moving forward.

How long does depression therapy take?

Depression therapy varies in relation to how long it takes. If you have different strands in relation to the cause of depression we would take a psychotherapeutic approach which might last a number of months.

Will I feel happy again?

Depression has a number of different causes. You can do something about it and you can find a way to move forward and feel happy again. The nature of this jounrey depends on your own individual circumstances.
